Know the Institute

MICHAEL IMOUDU NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LABOUR STUDIES (MINILS) was established in 1986 through a statute of the Federal government of Nigeria (Decree 2 of 1986; now, MINILS Act Cap 261 of the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1990).

Generated out of Policy directions enunciated in the 3rd National Development Plan (1975 – 1980)

The official foundation laying of the Institute was undertaken by President Shagari, GCFR on May 4 1983.

The law formerly establishing the Institute as National Institute for Labour Studies (NILS) came on stream in 1986, three years after the foundation laying ceremony.

In honour of the veteran labour activist and leader of the 1945 general strike, Pa Michael Aitokhiamen Omiunu, the Institute was renamed Michael Imoudu Institute for Labour Studies (MIILS) on May 1, 1992.

The word ‘national’ was added subsequently in order to project the public status of the institution.
